Shillong Peak, the highest point in Shillong, stands tall at an impressive altitude of 1961 meters (6,433 feet). This majestic peak, situated just 5 km south of the city, offers breathtaking views and is often enveloped in a mystical fog.
Unlike steep peaks, Shillong Peak boasts a unique semi-circular shape, resembling a crown resting on the expansive and flat top of Shillong Hill. To reach this magnificent peak, you can take the Upper Shillong or Jowai Road.
Another notable peak in the region is the Sohpetbneng Peak, which reaches an altitude of 1,343 meters. This peak holds great significance for the Hynfiiewtrep tribe, as it is considered sacred. With its picturesque surroundings, it is a sight to behold.
For adventure seekers, the Dingei Hill near the Umiam stream offers thrilling opportunities. There are two paths leading to this hill from Shillong. The first path takes you through Umiyangka village, where you’ll encounter a narrow tract that leads straight to the gorge. The steep and precipitous gradient on either side of the stream makes it perfect for mountain climbing.
The second route starts at Barapani on the GS Road, approximately 16 km from Shillong. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to captivating views of the Bhoi district, lying 300 ft below the summit of the Dingei Hill. If you’re looking for a different kind of adventure, head to the Dumpeep Peak in Swer. This peak stands tall at 5100 feet above sea level, offering a thrilling experience for nature enthusiasts. For those willing to venture a bit further, the Kyllang Rock awaits 78 km from Shillong.
This steep bare cliff of granite rises abruptly from the grassy downs, reaching a height of 200 meters. Its sheer beauty is a sight to behold. When it comes to lakes, Ward Lake is a must-visit tourist spot in Shillong. This horseshoe-shaped artificial lake is nestled beneath the Raj Bhavan and the Accountant General’s Office.
With its charming little aisles and a bridge, it provides a serene setting for visitors. The lake is home to a variety of fish, particularly grass carp, and feeding them from the bridge has become a favorite pastime for tourists. Legend has it that the lake was initiated by a Khasi prisoner who sought any kind of work to escape his cell.

The State Museum can be found at the State Central Library complex in Laichumiere, offering visitors a glimpse into the heritage and lifestyle of the Khasi tribe.
At Riatsamthiah, the Butterfly Museum houses a unique collection of butterflies and moths. The Botanical Garden near Ward Lake showcases various flora species of the region.
For nature enthusiasts, the Orchidarium of the Botanical Survey of India is a must-visit, boasting a rare collection of orchids. Adjacent to the Botanical Garden is the renowned Golf Course, known as the Gleneagles of the East. This colonial-style Golf club is Asia’s first 18-hole golf course.
Lady Hydari Park, situated behind the Shillong Civil Hospital near Pine Mount School, features a small museum, zoo, aviary, and deer park surrounded by tall cedars and pines. Visitors can explore the fruit garden near St. Edmund’s College, maintained by the Department of Agriculture. During spring, the garden blooms beautifully.
Additionally, reservoirs are filled with natural spring water, known as “Fishdale,” serving as garden irrigation and a fish breeding nursery for hill trout and carp.
Shillong is renowned for its churches, including the stunning Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, the Grotto Church below the hill, and the charming All Saints Church opposite the State Central Library, constructed from wood.
Various festivals are celebrated in Shillong, with Christmas, Easter, Good Friday, and New Year’s Day being significant. Khasi festivals like Ka Pomblang Nongkrem and Shad Sukmynsiem, Jaintia festival Behdiengkhlam, and Garo festival Wangala are also observed.
For shopping, popular areas include the Police Bazaar, Bara Bazaar, and Laitumukhrah.
