This is one of his 275 Padar Petrasthalams in which his three most famous Nayanars (Savit saints) Appal, Sundarar, and Tirugnanasambandar celebrate music. This temple has the longest corridor of any Hindu temple in India. This temple is also one of his 12 Jyotirlinga temples and in the form of Jyotirlinga, which means ‘Moon Pillar’. The interior of a spacious structure with large colonnades atop a five-foot-high platform. The third western tunnel connects with the paved road leading to the Sethumadhava temple in the west, forming a unique block structure called Chokkattan Madapam. The outer tunnel is said to be the longest in the world, measuring 6.9 meters high, 400 feet east to west, and  640 feet north to south, while the inner tunnel is 224 feet long.

Dress code: When visiting  Rameshwaram temple, it is important to adhere to the temple’s dress code. Men are encouraged to wear a dhoti and shirt, pajamas, pants, and shirt. For women sarees, churidars, or ‘pavadai’ and half sarees are the recommended attire.

Please note that those wearing shorts, Bermuda shorts, jeans, or leggings will not be permitted. No matter if you are wearing a tank top and pants or a sari, you cannot enter the main hall if you are still wet. Therefore, we recommend that you bring an extra change of clothes after “Terta Nana”.
